What should I say on the first call to a tax lead?

Short answer

Say who you are and your firm, remind them they asked for help, then ask short questions: IRS, state or both, about how much, what the letter says, are all returns filed, and is money being taken now. Then book a time to review their file.

A simple open: "Hi, this is [your name] with [your firm]. You asked for help with a tax balance. Is now an OK time for two minutes?"

If they ask "Is this the IRS?": "No. We are a private firm." Never let anyone think you are the government.

Never promise a result, an amount or "pennies on the dollar." Say "Let us look at your file first, then we can talk about your real options."
